Would it be okay to wear regular dress shoes with a tuxedo?
So prom is coming up and I have rented a tuxedo without the shoes. The reason for this is because I already have a nice pair of dress shoes, but they are not the shiny kind (don't know the name of the material). So is it alright to wear a tux with regular black dress shoes?

- The material you're thinking of is patent leather. As to whether you can get away with it, probably. So few men know how to do black tie well these days that you can mess up pretty badly without being noticed. Moreover, since black-tie events are held in low light, details become harder to see. As to whether it's a good idea: not all dress shoes are created equal. For instance, a highly-polished black cap-toe oxford would be a decent alternative to the real thing: http://www.tedsclothiers.com/productimages/air%20madero%20cap%20toe.jpg while black square-toed slip-ons would be absolutely wrong: http://www.sockmansocks.com/MAIN/27A_KCSQTLOABLK-M60271-KM25314LE-14_Top_After.jpg Assuming you've got the rest of the outfit right (no four-button jackets or long ties or colorful six-button vests) then well-polished black lace-ups are more or less acceptable.
