Why are some leather dress shoes more breathable than others?

My own pair of leather dress shoes aren't at all breathable, unlike a pair that belong to my friend. What is it about leather dress shoe construction that allows some pairs to be extremely breathable and disperse heat easily? Is it the construction of hte sole, leather? Can I easily tell whether a shoe is going to be breathable by the feel of the leather or any other means?

1. It depend on what type of leather, genuine leather (like cow, corcodile, etc) are breathable. Artificial types are not.
