Can you shine patent leather dress shoes?

I have a pair of structure dress shoes. They are patented leather. I was wondering if I need to shine these shoes with this kind of leather? If so, how?

1. No need to shine; simply wipe any marks off.
2. For a temporary fix, you can put on a little Vaseline and buff most of it off.
