Why do Japanese girls dress themselves down?
I know Japan is a very traditional country, but why do the girls there dress themselves about 7 years younger than they actually are? I host exchange students at school, and some of them look about twelve years old, when they are actually 18. Just a curiosity. H

- to me it seems like they dress older than they are... different perspectives... i usually mistake them for older than they are due to their style of dress.
- its fashionable and more attractive for them to look young and cute
- That's actually much more likely in China than Japan. Most Asian countries are quite traditional (ostensibly anyway) which allows their populations to be younger for a longer period of time. That being said, most Japanese girls have a fabulous sense of style and are cutting edge in their trend setting.
- I'm white with japanese female. Asian females are notorious for good aging. Japanese females are arguably the best aging females on the planet. Even if they dressed "up", they'd still look 7 years younger than they are. That is part of why asian females are becoming more and more popular with white males. They wear half as much cosmetics and look twice as young. My girlfriend is early 20's and is a substitute teacher , but she looks 15 or 16 especially considering her height. Plus she has kind of a baby voice. When she dresses professional, she still gets mistaken for a student and not a teacher. Anyways, when your IQ is as high as theirs is collectively (i believe japanese females are in the top 4 or 5 of all human female demographics in IQ).. you can pretty much dress any way you want. Beauty is in the brain. They may look and dress young but their group IQ puts their mental ages at 10 years older than they are.
- My school also hots Japanese exchange students. I think looking cute is part of what's fashionable over there. I love the uniforms they were if I had the thighs to be abl to pull it off I'd want a school uniform like that. That's just my taste though.
- In Japan, all the girls strive to be 'kawaii' (cute). In most western societies, the girls strive to be attractive in a sexualized way, but in Japan it almost reverses. Youth is admirable, and they want their appearance to reflect that. It's a highly desired aesthetic quality, and people go to all lengths to reflect this. I went to Japan in 2009, and my school regularly hosts Japanese students and it's always a cute overload. There are huge-eyed charracters to represent everything. In Harajuku, there are different and distinct styles and a lot are from a westerner's perception, extremely childish; http://www.kilikulu.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/harajuku-1.jpg It's odd to think that a country can have two extremes of traditional and popular-culture and it took some time to adjust. A lot of people think it's absurd and quite odd, and I agree with them to an extent. I think it's interesting. : )
