How do you make grass skirts for children?

I'm having a Luau theme party with 2 classes (5th graders) and I would like to have them make their own grass skirts

  1. !~ take a bunch of grass stick it in a pant with superglue ~ it works ~! (^_^) LOL!!
  2. come moe my lawn and i'll make the rest for you ;) lol
  3. Rice sacks work the best.
  4. go to the party store and buy them for 2 bucks.
  5. The children punched a hole on each end of a sentence strip then we added string on each end. the children wrote their names, (or the best that they can) in the middle of sentenced strip. On the back, they glued strips of colorful streamers to create a hula skirt. Later, we used them to dance to Hawaiian music. The children really enjoyed this activity. You can have them make "fire sticks" also with paper towel inserts. Let the children decorate with orange, red, and yellow streamers. Remind the parents for donations!!!! Here are comments from a teacher discussion board about hula skirts (thought it might help since your kids are older): I paid $6 - $8 each for grass skirts and got them home and figured out I could have made them for next to nothing. Use about 37" of twine for kid-sized, measure 8 1/2" inches from the ends to leave for tying and use raffia for the strands. Fold the raffia strands in half and slip-knot them around the twine (bring the ends up around the twine and through the loop and pull tight). You can lay them out and spray paint them if you want color. I've never tried this but I have used plastic table cloths to make fringe. I would think you could do the same thing. We used rolls of the disposable stuff that you cut as you go because we needed a lot. You could buy individual cloths if you don't need as much. I would get green but you could also get beige to look like the dried grass. I've seen skirts green and beige. I would glue one end of the plastic to a length of elastic. Stretch the elastic onto the plastic as you glue so you'll have a gathered look when you let go. Then just cut the skirt into the width of strips to look like grass. It might be time consuming. The fringe I made wasn't as skinny, so we were able to just glide the scissor up quickly. It's certainly worth a try. Here is a grass skirt for you: GRASS SKIRT INGREDIENTS: ice 1 1/2 measure gin 1 measure of triple sec or cointreau 1 measure pineapple juice 1/2 teasponn grenadine 1 pineapple slice PREPARATION: Drop the ice in the shaker, add the gin, triple sec, pineapple juice and the grenadine and shake like your a 15 year-old after watching Bo Derek in a movie where she's wearing next to nothing. Pour it into a glass and top it off with a pineapple slice. Aloha!
